Thank you to all who played at Swinley Forest last Thursday. We had a good turnout of 39 Members and 20 guests.
As always, we were made to feel very welcome in the clubhouse. Nearly everyone took advantage of the slightly cooler morning sunshine to sit out on the terrace, overlooking the putting green ad 18th hole, to enjoy catching up with friends over coffee and bacon roll. Breakfast enjoyed, a steady stream of cars voyaged towards the 10th tee car park ready for the 08:00, twined with the 1st tee, starting off time.
It wasn’t long before the temperature rose to nearly record temperatures for June. Luckily there was a gentle background breeze to help make things a little more comfortable, but several players certainly looked a little fried at the end of their rounds.
The course was in overall good condition, though was suffering in places from the lack of rain that we have had recently. Balls rolled a long way on the hard fairways, landing many in the thick heather. Although slower than in previous years, hidden undulations and run offs carried many putts off the greens in unforeseen directions. Only 2 golfers scored better than handicap.
Lunch was the usual Swinley carvery. At the end of lunch, our President, Ian Hill, gave a short speech welcoming everyone to the club, complimenting the course, the service and the food. He introduced 4 new members who were playing with the Society for the first time, and encouraged members present to ask friends and colleagues if they would like to attend events and join. He thanked the Membership for their ongoing support of the Society and asked for those wanting to play in Hankley Common to put their names forward asap to avoid disappointment. He congratulated the winners and introduced our Sponsor, Oliver Harris of Lease Car Credit, to present the prizes. We are very grateful for his ongoing and generous sponsorship of this event.
