Thank you to the 71 players, including 28 guests (7 from the FMI) who came along to our 2nd Member/Guest Day of 2026 at Woking Golf Club yesterday. Contrary to the BBC weather forecast, after a chilly start we were blessed with glorious sunshine.
Players started to gather at 07:30 for the obligatory bacon roll and coffee. Many were clearly in a very competitive mood because the putting green and practice nets were in good use by 08:00. Groups started to head off to their tees as early as 08:40, leaving plenty of time to get to the more far-flung tees. Everyone definitely got their daily steps in. At 09:00 the claxon sounded and games commenced.
Woking is a tough test of golf and historically not many visiting players beat handicap. This year was no exception, with only one player breaking handicap. Well played Paul Capleton. The hickory longest drive competition was generally well received on the 15th tee, doubtless helped by the offer of a shot of kummel or single malt. Whilst many of the resulting shots landed in the heather, there were some glorious efforts, with Brad Lawrence managing to achieve an awesome 265 yards. A truly fantastic drive.
Following a welcome shower, everyone enjoyed a drink on the veranda.
In order to keep costs down there was no starter for the meal this year. It was a choice of roast lamb carvery or a chicken in sauce for main course, followed by a choice of desserts. Whilst nearly everyone kept to the lamb, the chicken option was very tasty. Following the meal, our President, Ian Hill, gave a short speech thanking the club for looking after us so well, AutoProtect for kindly sponsoring the event for the last 7 years (and hopefully many years into the future), the FMI for co-hosting with us, and introduced the 3 new Members who were playing at Woking. Ian also emphasised the need of both Societies to actively seek new Members, and encouraged those present to seek potential candidates, with Motor Trade background, to apply for Membership. He then gave out to prizes to the MTGS Members and Guests. This was followed by a short speech by Ray Sommerville, Past President and Golf Manager of the FMI, thanking the Club and the MTGS and then giving out the prizes to the Fellowship.
