Thank you to all who played at our final 2025 MTGS Major Golf Day at Walton Heath on Tuesday. It’s been another fantastic year for the Society and that would not be possible without your support.
We had a good turnout of 45 players, including 16 guests. It was a little on the chilly side for the early arrivals at the club. The clubhouse staff were very efficient getting out the bacon rolls and there was plenty of decent, strong coffee on tap, so everyone was soon on their way to the 1st or 15th tee of the Old Course.
After all the recent rain showers, the course was in fantastic condition, and the infamous heather was in full bloom. One assumes that a flat course is going to be more boring than one with inclines, hills and gullies. Walton Heath puts paid to this theory. It was very challenging. Decent shots bounced into heather, never to be seen again and, as a result, only three players came in having played better than handicap.
Once in from the course, nearly everyone had a go at the 18 hole President’s Putting Contest. The tricky to read slopes on the putting green once more confused most of us, and only 3 people managed to break the magic figure of 36 putts.
After a refreshing shower and change of clothes, everyone gathered back in the clubhouse lounge for a pre-lunch drink and catch up with old friends. Special mention needs to be made of John Smith, who was amongst the first in and then last to sit down for lunch. He provided huge help by diligently collecting cards, checking scores and collating the results. Thank you John.
Lunch itself was the usual top notch 3 course carvery, which was very much enjoyed by everyone.
After lunch, in the absence of our President and Vice President, John Smith stepped up to introduce our sponsor, Johnny Latimer of Meridian Finance, who kindly handed out the prizes to our winners.
