MTGS vs AGS
Denham GC
22nd July 2025

Our team of intrepid golfers arrived by 07:45 for bacon rolls & coffee whilst AGS President Nigel Tinsley and I organised our pairings and handicaps

First tee off was at 08.30, on this the third of our new series of matches, the AGS having to step after many years for lack of a team

Having said that, for the two matches in this recent series, played at the lovely Denham GC, they have trounced us on both occasions

So selections of our pairings was tantamount to our potential success

First our was your scribe, taking over from Gerry L as match manager as he had a procedure on his knee (wishing Gerry well), and Oliver Harris playing against AGS President and Tom Purves ( ex Chairman of R-RMC & the RAC  - their membership is a little like a Who’s Who of our Industry )

Happily for the second occasion Oliver and I managed to scrape through with a 2 & 1 win

Next up our President Joff, played with Neil Smith against a very strong team, Mark Adams (AGS Secretary) off 11 and Rob Parks off 6 - our team managed an honourable half, which was key to our final score

The next two matches we lost against, albeit against some really tough golf

So, sitting on lovely terrace and enjoying a beer prior to lunch we were all sitting in the edge of our seats, waiting for the final pairing come in triumphantly or with a heavy head

Talking about the lovely terrace, if you haven’t Denham GC, you have to go. It’s a great course, all holes feeling different, adjacent to the local air field, with Cesna’s & helicopters buzzing around you constantly. The Club house is magnificent and the kitchen produces and very happy carvery

On the menu after our golf was roast beef or salmon, the yorkshires, roast or new potatoes & various vegatables

Pudding was crumble with lashing of custard, home made cheese cake or a cheese board

Wine was included in the cost of the day with various whites & red’s to consume - which was great as the AGS chaps are up for a laugh & and some good fun

Oh, and you’re thinking what happened to the last group - well happily bringing up the tail end, we had trojans John Smith with Matthew Boyles who smashed the last AGS team 7 & 5 !!

After lunch Nigel read out the scores and raised toast to the MTGS team, I thanked the staff at DGC especially Roger & Nick in the kitchen (it’s a tradition now) and our playing friends from the AGS and our President, Joff toasted the members of the AGS

So although we didn’t win overall, a hard fought honourable half was a good result

Hopefully can build on that for next year

ENDS
