MTGS vs Automobile GS Match Report

On a fine morning on Tuesday 23th July our galant team assembled in good time for our second match with the AGS in the recent period

Previously it had been an annual event although, unfortunately, 12 years ago the AG struggled to put a team together - so for a 10 year period there was no match organised

Happily last year it was reconvened, this time at the marvellous Denham Golf Club, adjacent to the local aerodrome whilst previously it had been played at the New Zealand GC

We had a full turn out from both Societies, fielding 10 players for 5 matches of '4 ball better ball’

Our Match Manager, & current MTGS President Gerry had, on the previous Thursday, a back procedure & his surgeon had suggested a period of complete rest, so he had to stand down for the day at home in Scotland

So, we really felt that we had to play hard & win our matches to keep his spirits up

The first pairing was organised with Oliver Harris & your scribe against AGS President Nigel Tinsley & ex Chairman of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Tom Purves

Happily, against some stiff competition, the Oliver & I managed to claim a win

As always the AGS have some very keen and skilful golfers & although Matthew Boyles & Neil Smith halved their match, the AGS won all of the others

So overall the victory was decisive at three & a half against one & a half

They won last year too & apparently prior to the cessation of the fixture, they normally won anyhow……..

After a shower and a few cordials, we retired to the magnificent Dinning Hall

Constructed over 500 years ago, the Dinning Hall is the centre of Club House, which was built around the Hall when the Club was opened in 1909

As always at Denham, not only is the Hall more than impressive, the lunch is equally impressive too

Washed down a hearty amount of wine

After speeches the MTGS players rose & saluted our friends of the AGS, to which Nigel & his AGS colleagues reciprocated

We left Denham having had a most pleasurable day & look forward to turning the tables next year
