News and information from this event
Thank you to those who played at Hankley Common last Tuesday. Thankfully we were blessed with warm, dry weather, which made a pleasant change from the sunshine and showers of the previous days.
It was wonderful to see a turnout of 85 players (including 35 guests). I’m not sure the club sees many Society turnouts this large, but they handled our group admirably. Everyone had coffee and a roll in record time so we could all reach our designated tees within an hour of arrival. Apologies to those of you who started on one of the more far flung tee boxes. Every tee was used, with 4 tees being used as starting points by two groups ten minutes apart.
Hankley Common is a very special heathland course. It sprawls over 164 acres of heather, rowans, oaks, pines and birches. Walking along the fairways, it feels like another 18 or 36 holes could easily fit on the site. Apart from the greens, which were slow and slightly bobbly after hollow tining the previous week, the course was in fabulous condition and the heather was in full bloom.
The heather catching all but the most straight of drives, and the course maintenance sand slowing the greens, did not stop some excellent scores being made. Two players each recorded an “Eagle”. Our Division 1 Winner, Ian Dowdesell, came in with an admirable 40 points. Our Division 2 Winner, Peter Featherstone, followed up his 38 points at Swinley Forest with 37 points at Hankley Common. Good golf Peter. One guest gave his group a golfing lesson, racking up a magnificent 42 points off a scratch handicap. That’s six below scratch gross!
Following the game, it was marvellous to see a dining room full of conversation and laughter, with everyone enjoying a first class 3 course meal.
Following lunch, our President, Graeme Hunt, said a few words.
• Thank you all for coming out to support the Society today. 85 players is a record turnout for the Society in recent memory.
• Thank you to our hosts today at Hankley Common for looking after us so well.
• Welcome to our only lady guest of the day, Tina Van Breugel
• Thank you to John Smith and Sean Friedman for helping with the cards and scoring today
• We are all lucky to be part of a successful Society, with such history and traditions, playing such prestigious venues. It is noticeable that there are some Members who are not wearing Society polo shirts when playing, and not wearing a MTGS tie for lunch. A fine of £5 (per Society polo or tie not worn) is going to be imposed on any Member who forgets to wear the correct Society apparel.
• Our annual Charity Golf Day, in aid of the Motor Industry Charity BEN, is going to be held on Friday 22nd September at Effingham Golf Club. As a Society, it is important to give something back to the Industry that we are all a part of, so could Members please be encouraged to enter a team, or at least individually, in the event
