Thank you to the 12 MTGS Members who took part in the inaugural MTGS vs Oil Industry match yesterday at Hayling Golf Club.
We were blessed with 30 degrees, brilliant sunshine and hardly a puff of wind. We all gathered in the Art Deco style clubhouse. Lovely to have a coffee on the balcony terrace, which has amazing views overlooking the course and the Solent, framed by the Isle of Wight in the distance.
We could not have played the course in more idyllic conditions. The usually fearsome rough was brown and shrivelled, which made most ball searches straightforward. The greens were not overly fast but had some complex burrows which made putting difficult. I am sure in mid-February the course would be a completely different animal.
The food afterwards was of good quality, and no one went home hungry.
Thank you to Martin Derrick for stepping up for the after dinner short speech and thanks to the venue staff and other team members.
The result was a very fair draw. Two wins and two halves for each side.
It was good to see how many people from the two teams already knew one another, or had common contacts, via the industry, common golf clubs and the RAC Motoring section. It was much more akin to a well established match, with people catching up with one another, rather than our first fixture. All round a great success and we look forward to next year’s fixture.
