President’s team vs MTGS
Trevose GC – 6/7 September 2010
Match Report
This fixture began in 2001 at Trevose in Cornwall when Mike Evans was President of the Society and has been continued by successive President’s ever since. The course is a championship links with many testing holes and some fine views and is host to the Brabazon Trophy – Men’s English Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
Trevose is also a hotel and country club with excellent self catering accomodation in bungalows and a very comfortable bar and good restaurant. With the many and varied Rick Stein establishments in nearby Padstow available too, we were spoiled for choice of eating and drinking hostelries. We didn’t let anyone down on that front!
This match is for two teams of ten players, the President’s team this year being chosen from friends and associates in golf as well as a sprinkling of the very finest talent from amongst the membership of MTGS. Those selected few to represent your President on his team were Lionel Squire, Ian Wilson, Brian Lowe, Eamon Bradley and Nick Kingsbury – I ask you, what a bevy of golfing excellence. How could the President graciously accept the trophy on Tuesday and at the same time avoid being seen as a little too presumptive? That was the main item for debate as we settled down to the langoustines at Chez Stein on the Sunday night.
But as your President’s team sipped their house ‘Haut Poitou’ at the modestly priced ‘Cafe’, the noveau riche members of the MTGS team were already into their 4th bottle of Puligny Montrachet at the bonkers ‘Restautant’. Their eventual arrival back at Trevose, somewhat the worse for their evening experience, gave further credence to the view that this could be a very one sided contest.
This was precisely how it turned out. However, the original script got changed somewhat. Monday morning poured with rain, we delayed the start, but eventually had to tee off in 4BBB format at 2.00pm. Everyone got drenched and then slowly dried out on the back 9. End of day score was 4:1 to the MTGS. Tuesday dawned bright and sunny and we teed off from 8.00am in matchplay 2-balls. The least said about the score the better. Suffice to say the President would like to offer his heartlelt gratitiude to Ian Wilson for coming in with a win and saving a complete whitewash.
Outside of golf, the hospitality at Trevose was excellent. Congratulations are in order to the MTGS for a convincing win. Thanks to all in the President’s team for a sporting contest.. Thanks most of all to Mike Evans, member and indeed Vice Captain at Trevose, for his great care and courtesy in making such fine arrangements for our comfort and our sport.
