MTGS: BEN Day Report
This year, for the first time, the MTGS took over organising the Charity Golf Day on behalf of BEN that has traditionally been held at St George's Hill and organised by Nick Kingsbury.
With help from Nick, MTGS President Martin Derrick arranged for the event to the switched to Effingham Golf Club, a fine venue for winter golf as the Harry Colt-designed course (and now an Open Qualifying venue) is located on the fast-draining chalk Surrey Hills.
And so, on November 21st, we attracted a full shotgun field of 72 players who enjoyed a cold, but mercifully rain-free, round followed by a fine lunch and an auction of four-ball vouchers, kindly donated by various Clubs, conducted by former F1 driver and current media star Tiff Needell.
Winners of the best 3 out of 4 team prize with a remarkable 126 Stableford points were Nick Haigh, Joff Suter, James Cawkell and Mike Miller.
Second, on 117 points, on countback, were Lee Cooksey, Dave Porter, Anthony Chicheporte and Ian Montgomerie.
And third, also on 117 points, was the President's team of Martin Derrick, Tiff Needell, Peter Apsin and David McDougall.
Longest Drive went to that man Nick Haigh and Nearest The Pin to Tim Evans.
Most importantly, the day raised around £5,500 for BEN, with more to come as we have two further four-ball vouchers to raffle at our Annual Lunch at the RAC Club on December 11th.
Hopefully, this will now become an established event on the MTGS golfing calendar – and the date has already been fixed for next year so please get November 19th 2020 in your diaries now.
