WORPLESDON MATCH REPORT
The day dawned rainy and overcast, but by the time we were ready to tee-off the weather lifted and improved all day to give a beautiful afternoon .Our assembled team arrived in good time (many thanks to Oliver for stepping in at late notice.)
The RLC had as usual assembled a team of fit young men and older luminaries, with enough brigadiers and generals to start a small incursion into a foreign country. Worplesdon presented a course in good condition but with a couple of temporary greens due to major drainage work.
Douglas Drummond and Stan Chicksand led us off and after a hard fought match, never more than one hole in it, lost on the 18th
David Potts and I were paired next and almost immediately went to three down. The fight back started on the back half and we went to the 18TH tee all square and managed to win 1 up thanks to some spectacular play by David.
Oliver Harris and Paul Healy had a very enjoyable match ending in a narrow 2and 1 defeat.
John Day and Neil Smith went down 4 and 2 against a strong RLC pair.
Martin Derrick and our President were paired to be the sting in the tail; unfortunately they got stung with a narrow 2 and 1 defeat.
Overall a 4-1 drubbing which after last year’s victory was disappointing.
The usual high standard of food was enjoyed by all and Paul kindly said a few words and shared a few jokes before presenting the trophy to the RLC.
This as usual was a great day at a little gem of a course played in a fantastic spirit with some old friends so do put this on your choice list for next year!
