St George’s Hill Spring Meeting
Thursday 12th April 2018
MTGS Meeting Report

Despite the course being closed the previous day due to very heavy rain, the course was in pretty good nick and we enjoyed reasonable weather at St Georges Hill today although it was a little nippy at times.

The turnout was very disappointing at 46 compared to last year’s 59. The main points covered, after an excellent lunch, by the President were: -

• A welcome to all present and a particular one to three first timers as MTGS members - Martin Bailey, Paul Dhesi and Ian Hill
• A sincere "thank you" for the continued sponsorship of our prizes by BCA. Craig Purvey, the Chief Commercial Officer and MTGS member, unfortunately can’t make it: we do, however, have a very able stand in namely Greg Taylor who will present the prizes
• Our opening event of the season was very successful namely the Committee Cup played at New Zealand GC where the Committee managed to repeat last year’s victory
• A reminder that this is the first of our five "majors" to find the player of the year: the other four are Woking (June 1st), Swinley Forest (June 28th) which will be a very special day with 25 holes of golf rounded off by tea, Hankley Common (August 14th) and Walton Heath (September 13th). Get your guests lined up for the three member/guest days
• We have recently received the very sad news that our ex President and great MTGS stalwart, Peter Batchelor, is seriously ill

The results are detailed below. In summary, the course won! By way of example, I confessed to being rather disappointed with a meagre 22 Stableford points and then discovered I was seventh equal out of twenty-four in Division 2! It was also true that our new boys fared very well – Malcolm Bailey and Ian Hill were in the prizes whilst Joff Suter, who joined us last year, continues to perform splendidly despite our handicap cuts.

Martin Derrick hit a lovely drive for his Drive-In (photo below)

A short, thinly attended AGM completed the day - the minutes will be posted on the website in due course. Here is my personal summary: -

• A society in overall very good shape (including its finances, despite a loss on the Dinner)
• Martin Derrick confirmed as this year's President
• Nick Haigh voted in as President Elect
