Annual Dinner

The Savoy

London

Thursday 5th Dec 2002

Members and their guests, totalling about 400, enjoyed a superb evening at the Savoy. As usual the food was excellent and the opulence in the dining room had to be seen to be believed.

Prior to the start of dinner, a few words were said in memory of Dickie Mobbs who sadly passed away in November. Dickie, who was Hon Sec for the Society from 1984 to 1999, did an enormous amount for the Society. There was a table collection for BEN in his memory which raised a staggering £4204.00

Following the dinner the first toast was to "The Society coupled with the name of The President" and was proposed by Eric Richard who is well known for his TV role in "The Bill". His entertaining speech contained many references to Lionel and all were laughing hilariously. In the response Lionel thanked all the Officers of the Society for their hard work throughout this year, especially mentioning Philip Payze (Hon Sec.) and Brian Lowe (Dinner organizer). He thanked the staff of the Savoy for their excellent service and finished his speech with amusing reminiscences of his year as President!

Tony Worthy our President Elect proposed the toast to "The Guests" and on behalf of the members thanked Lionel for his work through the last year. Tony said he was much looking forward to his year as President but thought Lionel might be a hard act to follow!

The response to "The Guests" was by Sandy Jones who kept us all in stitches with his stories from the Ryder Cup. He had brought the actual Ryder Cup with him and as can be seen from the photos below many members enjoyed "holding" the cup! RJF
