Hankley Common Golf Club
Member/Guest Day – Tuesday 25 May 2010
This was our second meeting of the year and our first Member/Guest meeting and it was pleasing to see a turnout of 56 golfers assemble for the shotgun start at 08.45 hrs.
As usual Hankley was in pristine condition with the lush greens perhaps just a little slower than usual but playing as true as ever. In my opinion, this event at Hankley Common is one of the highlights of the year. A great example of a Surrey heath and heather course, it is such a good test of golf and such a fair track which is why perhaps it has again been chosen as an ‘Open’ regional qualifier.
The ‘clerk of the weather’ was kind to us too. Playing conditions were ideal; sunny and warm with a light, westerly breeze – it doesn’t get much better than that! Off the course, we were welcomed as usual by the friendly and familiar faces of the staff at the Club and luncheon was enjoyed by all – those who had the Morrocan lamb tagine in particular being fulsome in their praise. Members who have attended this event in past years will remember with fondness the ‘lady of the kitchen’, Deanna, who has now retired. We will miss her friendly presence but of course wish her well in her retirement.
On to the golf and it was no surprise that, given the benign conditions, scoring was a bit better than last year. Division 1 members fought to a 38 point three way tie at the top, with Stan Chicksand losing out on countback to Les Brown who took the Motor Trophy as runner up. The winner was Peter Featherstone who was presented with the Mecantile Salver.
For Division 2 members, the situation was a little more clear cut. David Warren was runner up with a score of 39 points and was presented with the Motor Trophy (Wentworth) and the winner was Tony Willis with 40 points and the John Hopkins Bowl. Full details of all prizewinners are attached.
Finally, to note that we were happy to welcome to this event, John Fulton, Captain of Woburn GC and a guest of our own Peter Batchelor OBE. Similarly, we were delighted by the presence of another officer of that Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Sir Tom Hilliard OBE, who was a guest of Peter Featherstone.
