MTGS v VOLVO at Maidenhead Golf Club
Thursday 15 september 2011
A cloudless sky greeted the teams as they assembled at Maidenhead Golf Club for this traditional Autumn match for The Charles Singer Trophy, who was responsible for introducing Volvo cars to the U.K. in the 1950s.
The pairings were announced over bacon rolls and coffee and the match commenced at 9am with Lionel Squire and Bob Pickles leading from the front for Volvo against James Crickmay and Steve Drewitt for the MTGS.
A lively match with much banter and some excellent golf resulted in a narrow victory for the MTGS by 2 and 1.
Match 2 went to Volvo with Charles Slaughter and Terry Gower defeating Neil Smith and Roger Prowting by 4 and 2 with Charles doing most of the damage with a barrage of birdies!
Match 3 was halved with Godrfey Hall and John Woollatt showing great determination coming back from 2 down with 5 to play against Chris Carey and Cliff Hillman and so it was the final match which decided the outcome with Ray Fisher and Paul Kempton beating Dominic Gill and Richard McCully by an impressive 6 and 4 .
Final Score MTGS 2 1/2 VOLVO 1 1/2
During lunch, Lionel graciously presented the Trophy to the MTGS and announced that this may be the last match played as there is a lack of interest from Volvo!! I sincerely hope that the powers that be can generate enough interest to keep this historical match going especially as Volvo put so much into European Golf over the years.
My thanks to the catering staff for looking after us so well and congratulations to the greenstaff for the presentation of the golf course, particularly the greens which I believe are the finest we have played this year. My thanks also to Lionel for organising the match and of course to the victorious MTGS team for another win. Lastly , the BEN coffers have been swelled by £20 from Charles Slaughter (£10 fine for improper dress at Walton Heath and £10 sale of my apple crumble in exchange for his cheese and biscuits!!) Thank you Charles.
I look forward to the next match to be played on 22nd September against the North West at Blackwell.
