Match report for our match against the Scottish MTGS
at the London Club, Kent. 10th May 2012
Both teams met up for lunch on Thursday 10th May on very blustery and wet day which tested every player in both teams. The pairings were selected and announced post lunch and Derek Allen and James Crickmay teed of first against Hugh Sutherland and Colin Nicholson followed by Peter Featherstone and Ray Fisher then John Smith and David Warren and playing in the anchor position Ian Wilson and Vip Khanna.
The weather became steadily worse and the round progressed with a howling wind and persistent rain. The conditions were dreadful. At the end of the first round the honours were even at 2-2. Our winning pairs were Peter and Vip and John and David. Our President Derek Allen and James Crickmay managed to lose their game 4 & 7(strange but true) and Ray and Ian were narrowly beaten.
We enjoyed a splendid dinner at the club along with some terrific wine which had been very well organised by Vip. The pairing were announced for the following day and we all then retired to the hotel bar. It was a jovial and amusing evenings with plenty of good cheer all round. So much so that the SMTGS captain Hugh Sutherland ended up sleeping in the bath (without water apparently) in his room for most the night.
The next morning was sunny but windy day; thank God it had stopped raining... After a hearty breakfast and an exchange of stories from the day and evening before both teams got ready to play.
Peter Featherstone and Ian Wilson got the second round under way followed by Derek Allen and David Warren then John Smith and Ray Fisher with James Crickmay and Vip Khanna in the anchor position.
Our MTGS team won the second days play 3-1 with the first three pairs winning so winning the match 5-3. John and Ray won their match, and as a result the whole teams victory, with the last putt on the 18th green.
This meant we had won back to back which is a great achievement. So thanks to all of my team for a brilliant performance.
Hugh Sutherland presented the Roll Royce Trophy to our very proud President along with a framed cartoon story about Scots and the English as a memento.
Derek Allen – President.
