MTGS v BVRLA Annual Golf Match at Stoke Park on the 1st October 2014

We arrived at Stoke Park at 7.30 - or most of us did other than a few latecomers due to the vagaries of the dreaded M25 - for coffee and very good bacon rolls to set us up for the day. The BVRLA team is now selected from all the winners of their various golf tournaments around the country and, therefore, they are able to field a very strong team.
For the 1st October the weather was ideal and your President and myself teed off for the first match at 8.24. The course was probably in the best condition ever over the 19 years in which this event has been played at Stoke Park and it was a credit to the green keeping staff.
Regrettably my golf was awful, my excuse being that my MTGS golf this year has been significantly curtailed due to a back problem and Eamon Bradley tried hard to compete with two competitive opponents on his own. Suffice it to say we lost this first match.
Mike Warnes and last minute replacement Terry Wills won the second match and Langley Davies and Mike Bell lost to the very strong opposition one of whom was the son (handicap 3) of the most famous and noted golf referee and rules official on the European Tour - John Paramor.
Steve Wright and Craig Brown convincingly won their match and after the first four matches it was honours even. Peter Batchelor and John Wake came in with a hard fought half and Robert Cole and Graham Balaam unfortunately narrowly lost the final match the overall result being the MTGS losing by a single point (2.5 – 3.5).
After some liquid refreshment, we all enjoyed a very good, convivial meal and agreed that this match will continue to be played annually for years to come and we all got away before the rush hour.
